Pupils of ‘St. Anthony Nursery and Primary School’ located in Kajjansi along Entebbe road, on 09 August 2017,
visited Mukono Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute Farm in Ntawo, Mukono District as part of their practical learning to understand the agricultural practices deployed by Uganda farmers as studied in their Social Studies and Science subjects.
Headed by the school Deputy Head (Academics – Upper), Ismail Kalulu, the pupils and teachers were received by the Head of the Farm alongside his assistant farm manager Kituuka George.
Mr. Kituuka George briefed the pupils on various activities carried out at the farm. The pupils were taught about caring for the cows, chickens, goats and other animals. Brief lessons on the plants and the weeds in the garden received.
The Head of Social Studies – Ismail Kalulu and Head of Science – Florence Nakubulwa guided the pupils on the farm tour for the afternoon and said it enhanced pupils’ learning when they were able to practically use the items which had been studied theoretically in class. The teachers said it’s a way of promoting agricultural skills by giving the pupils opportunities to carryout demonstration plots and conduct scientific experiments among others.
Ismail Kalulu, the Deputy Head (Academics – Upper) mentioned that the lessons learnt from a farm field trip run from the gamut from alternative energy to vegetables, maple, cows, chickens, and much more. Not only did the pupils learn about farm practices, chores, animals, plants, the farm lifestyle, the product, and farm economics, but they also learnt about history, math, science, art, music and health – topics that are relevant to their classroom curriculum.
It was an afternoon well spent.
