The big challenge for teachers is not simply getting pupils to read – it's getting them to enjoy it too. It's one thing for pupils to trudge through set texts in a lesson and another for them to open another book when they get home at the end of the day.
It’s said, if children do not enjoy reading when they are young, then they are unlikely to do so when they get older. That’s why at St. Anthony Nursery & Primary School we always carryout reading competition.
On 11th August 2017,the Nursery school held its 2017 annual reading competition whose aim is to test and improve our pupils’ reading capabilities. The Managing Director Ms. Ssanyu Gorreth Nanjeru emphasized the need to build the reading skill among the young learners. She committed to having a Young learners library for the Lower and Nursery sections in 2018 to cater for all reading materials needed for the section. She acknowledged that for outstanding pupils in today’s competitive world must be able to read and comprehend all materials before them.
Mr. Augustine Wabbi, the Deputy Head - Administration & Welfare said that, children won't find reading pleasurable if there is too much pressure on them, so a relaxed atmosphere and a positive ethos around reading is really important. Encouraging children to read for pleasure is about more than getting them to pick up a book; it's equally important for children to appreciate a good story.
Showing pupils that teachers of all subjects read books, not just the English teachers, is really important," says Ms. Ann Nalule. She further went on to say; the surroundings should encourage reading in all its forms and support their choices of reading material.
